Town - Babanango
Originally part of a land grant to European farmers in 1885 by King
Dinizulu, the town remains a centre of agriculture and is ideally situated
for visitors wanting to explore the Battlefields Route.
The name Babanango translates as 'Father there it is' - indicating the
high hill which is a landmark of the area.

Hiking Trails:
Eagle's View Trail: Starts on a private farm near Babanago. a map is
provided or you can choose to take a guide along. Contact: Tel 27 35

The Umfolosi-Thongaland Trail: The trail starts at Babanango, at the
Mondi heritage site camp. this trail combines some of Zululand's most
interesting, beautiful and exciting country, from the grassland and
bush along the Umfolozi river. the trail covers some of South Africas
best game and birding country the trail is open all year round.

Trans-Zululand:This five to six day trail starts at the Eagle's View
country house near Babangago. It follows the Umfolozi River, heads towards
the Nahlazathshe Mountain, then to Ulundi, the Opathe Game Reserve,
Umfolozi Game Reserve, St Lucia/Cape Vidal, Sodwana Bay, Ozabeni Forest
and ends at Manzibomvu.

Battles and Sites
Fort Prospect:
This was one of the battles fought as a result of General Botha's second
offensive into Natal. On the 26 September 1901 Botha launched an attach
against a British post at Fort Prospect. The British defended well and
the Boers were thus forced to retreat. This Battle site is situated
in the Nkandla area near Babanango and Melmoth.
Battle of Itala:
This was the second of three important battles, that occurred as a result
of Generals Botha's second invasion of Natal in second half of 1901.
A British post near Mount Itala and forward party that had been placed
on Mount Itala to thwart a Boer attack were engaged on the 25 and 26
of Sptember 1901. The British on Mount Itala were beaten back, but the
British post near this hill stood firm and drove the Boers back.
iTaleni: During this Boer-Zulu Battle of April 1838. Piet and Dirkie
Uys were killed. The rest of the Boer Kommando who managed to flee this
ambush were given the name of the Vlugkommando.The Battle Sites of Rorkes
Drift and Isandlwana are also in easy reach of Babanago.
